Oldest local pub Maastricht | Pubs and bars
Pubs are mainly a place to get a meal and some drinks to go alongside it, while bars focus more on alcohol and higher-quality liquor. An eetcafé (‘eating café’) in Maastricht offers bistro-like food and has mostly simple menus. An eetcafé is similar to a small neighborhood restaurant or pub. They feature a casual and friendly atmosphere. Eetcafés have often local beers on tap and offer usually a larger wine list than that of a brown café. Oldest local pub Maastricht | Café In den Ouden Vogelstruys
Café In den Ouden Vogelstruys is located at Vrijthof square and is a local meeting place in Maastricht. This was the case for years, or rather centuries, because the bar’s history dates back to the 14th century. Vrijthof is the largest and possibly best-known square in Maastricht, with many well-known pubs and restaurants. The current façade of In den Ouden Vogelstruys dates from 1730.
Before the façade was made of stone, it was made of wood. Funny to know: before it was a wooden building, the Struys was also made of stone. The oldest reports of this date from 1309. This means that the Struys has a history of more than 700 years. You feel that history as soon as you enter the café. On the wall hang drawings of former regulars that were drawn between 1956 and 1964.
