The City Hall Maastricht | The architect
Stadshuis Maastricht City Hall built over the years 1659-1664 under the guidance of master architect Pieter Post. The Stadhuis is the town hall in the Center of Maastricht. It is located on the Markt – market square. It is one of the main sights in the old town. The building was designed by Architect Pieter Post in the 17th century in the style of Dutch classicism. The significant tower is dating from 1684. Unfortunately you cannot climb the tower like a church tower in Maastricht. A carillon is visible on the top with 49 bells, is still in use. Our editor Laura Swift from MAASTRICHT MAGAZINE ONLINE takes a look!
The Stadshuis Maastricht City Hall | The exterior
The detached five-storey building is completely clad in Namur stone. The sloping slate roof, is considered to be an important example of Dutch classicism. The front façade decoration includes sculpted figures like the city maiden depicted with the Maastricht coat of arms, flanked by the seated Mars and Minerva.

The Stadshuis Maastricht City Hall | The interior
The interior of the building is also very attractive with beautiful wall tapestries, stucco work, ceiling paintings, and mantelpieces. The rich, largely 18th-century interior, emerged after the French bombardment during the Siege of Maastricht (1793) which had heavily damaged the building. It reflects the duality of Maastricht, whereby the edificehas a divition of two: the north half – Liège, and the south half – Brabant. The Liège rooms are on the main side. The front, western part of both halves is for the judiciary administration. The rear, eastern part was for the city administrators.
