ENCI area in Maastricht | More than industrial heritage

The ENCI quarry was a large limestone extraction site that operated for over a century, from 1926 to 2018. It resulted in a distinctive landscape with cliffs, steep slopes, and a deep pit.

After the quarry’s closure, the ENCI area underwent a transformation to promote nature conservation and ecological restoration. The pit is today a lake known as the “ENCI Lake” . Cliffs and slopes provide habitats for various plant and animal species.

It offers walking and cycling trails around the lake, providing opportunities for leisurely strolls and enjoying the natural surroundings. The area also features picnic spots and viewpoints with panoramic views of Maastricht and the Meuse River.

The ENCI area is part of the larger Maastricht Frontenpark, a green space that encompasses the former fortifications and city defenses of Maastricht. The Frontenpark connects several parks, gardens, and historic sites like Chateau Neercanne, creating a network of green areas for residents and visitors to explore.
